Rupert Giles was the librarian of Sunnydale High, and more importantly, Buffy's Watcher. His duty was to train her, and prepare her for dealing with the monsters. Giles became involved with Jenny Calander, who was the computer science teacher. When Ethan Rayne came to town, he reveiled a bit of the old Ripper. He and Ethan and the rest of the gang had worshipped a demon named Eyghron. He came after them to kill them, and possessed Miss Calendar. When she was unpossessed, she didn't trust him.
They did get back together, but again broke apart when they found out she was a gypsy, who was sent to watch over Angel. Giles stayed away from her in his loyalty to Buffy. Buffy later talked to Miss Calander, and they were going to get back together, but Angelus killed Miss Calander, to stop her from giving him back his soul. He placed her in Giles's bed. Giles was later tortured by Angelus in Becoming 2, and Drusilla hypnotized him to make him see her as Jenny, and found out how to open Acathla.
When Buffy turned 18, Giles was to test her, and he injected some kind of thing into her, that made her lose her strength. She was to fight a vampire without it. He told her about it when the vampire escaped, and she was very upset. Since he told her about it, the Watcher's Council fired him. He was still the librarian, and he would still act as Buffy's Watcher. When Sunnydale High blew up, Giles lost his job.
He is now unemployed, and he occasionally sees Olivia, who he knew when he was Ripper. He still helps Buffy.
